Luke 17:1–2

"It would be better for you if a millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea than for you to cause one of these little ones to stumble."

Many of you have been following the events in our community regarding Pawleys Island Community Church. Several members of the church staff, including the pastor, have been indicted and remain under investigation. As we pray for the congregation and for all those affected, we also acknowledge the harm that has been done and recommit ourselves to protecting children, youth, and vulnerable adults.

Since 1996, the United Methodist Church has required every congregation to maintain a Safe Sanctuaries ministry for children, youth, and vulnerable adults. Each year, we review and update, as needed,  our policies for everyone who serves in these ministries. This includes comprehensive training, background checks, careful screening, and ongoing accountability.

This week, I took time to review Surfside United Methodist Church's Safe Sanctuaries policies.  I believe these policies to be strong, but we will review them more thoroughly in committee. I am especially thankful for the many volunteers and staff members who faithfully participate in our Safe Sanctuaries training. Your commitment to caring for children, youth, and vulnerable adults reflects the love and responsibility Christ has entrusted to us.

As Senior Pastor of Surfside UMC, I am fully committed to following and enforcing our Safe Sanctuaries policies and best practices. We will continue to require background checks, provide regular training, and maintain accountability for everyone who serves in these ministries. Creating and preserving a safe environment is not simply a policy… it is a sacred responsibility.

I leave you with one final thought. John Wesley's Three Simple Rules for Christian living are:

Do No Harm
Do Good
Stay in Love with God*

I believe these rules are intentionally given in this order. When we ignore or overlook harm, we diminish our ability to do good and to be the light Christ has called us to be in the world.
