The Christmas season is behind us, and Lent is just around the corner. It is hard to imagine how quickly Easter will come!
In between these two major events in the life of the Church, we will be celebrating the Sixtieth Anniversary of Surfside UMC. The actual chartering date is January 31, 1966, but our celebration will take place on Sunday, February 8. We will have ONE service that day at 10:00 in the sanctuary with Bishop Leonard Fairly preaching, followed by dinner in the Family Life Center. Sign-ups for the meal will begin next Sunday. I hope that you will plan to be here, and will invite family and friends who may have been connected to the church to join you.
Our theme for the Celebration is “Rooted and Grounded in Love,” based on the text from Ephesians 3:16-19: “I pray that, according to the riches of His glory, He may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through His Spirit and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
Our church mission statement is “Living out the love of Jesus through word, faith, and works.” In order to be able to live in such a way, we have to be rooted in Love itself. That groundedness is what has enabled our church to grow and flourish for the past 60 years. That groundedness is what will continue to move our church forward into the future in ministry and mission. That groundedness is what feeds us and nurtures us to become disciples for the transformation of the world.
I am proud to serve as pastor of this church and, along with you, to build on all that others have done before us. Now it is our turn to leave a legacy for future generations. During this Sixtieth anniversary year we will be exploring opportunities to make a lasting impact. Together we can. Together we will.
Blessings for the journey+
