Those of us who have been United Methodists for a while know that we have an itinerant system for deploying clergy to serve in churches. When it is time for a change in pastoral leadership the Bishop and Cabinet (District Superintendents), in consultation with pastors and Staff Parish Relations Committees, seek to determine the needs of the churches and the gifts and graces of the clergy who may be appointed.
We are in such a time as this here at Surfside UMC. I have reached the maximum age that a pastor can serve before retiring. I will retire at Annual Conference this year, and my last Sunday as your pastor will be June 14. Y’all have made retirement look like so much fun that I am beginning to get excited about it! I believe that we have had a fruitful and meaningful season of ministry together over the past six years. While there have been some challenges along the way, I am grateful for the privilege of sharing this time with you.
George and I will be moving to Greenville, SC, which is my hometown and an area that we both love. I am going to be serving on the staff of Advent UMC as Minister of Congregational Care and Older Adults. This will be a part-time position allowing us to have the opportunity to visit with family, especially grandchildren.
This morning it was announced in worship that the Rev. Andrew Wolfe has been appointed to serve as the next lead pastor here. He is currently serving as pastor of St. James United Methodist Church in Spartanburg, SC. Andrew is married to the Rev. Paige Wolfe who is an ordained Deacon in the UMC, and they have four children. Andrews likes to play pickleball so he will fit right in! I am delighted for them to have this opportunity to be in ministry here with you, and am confident that great things will be accomplished for the Kingdom of God.
Now the work of transition begins. We have much left to do in the time we have remaining together. Easter is coming, with the reminder that God continues to be at work for good in the world, and in us. I trust that in this new season we will discover that truth in new ways.
Blessings for the journey+
Pastor Mary Teasley
