I believe that at some point in life, everyone has asked themselves, “Who am I?” and “What is my purpose?” Questions of identity have always been deeply important to me. As Rev. Mary reminded us last week, our core matters. Without a strong core, it becomes easy to lose our sense of meaning and purpose. And when we forget who we are, we can also forget why we exist, sometimes saying and doing things that are contrary to our true identity.
The same is true for the church.
So, who are we at Surfside United Methodist Church? Through our mission statement, we proclaim that we are a church that lives out the love of Jesus through Word, Faith, and Works. Today, as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of this congregation, we pause to give thanks. We reflect on the countless ministries, faithful leaders, and devoted members who have shaped lives—here in our community and around the world. Through it all, one truth remains constant: we are a church called to live out the love of Jesus through Word, Faith, and Works.
As we look ahead to a future still unfolding by God’s hand, may we remain rooted in that identity. May we never lose sight of our core. And may the love of Jesus continue to guide who we are, shape what we do, and shine through us—today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.
