Stephen Ministry At SUMC

Ever since the first training class in 2011, the Stephen ministry program has become an integral way in which SUMC reaches out to its members and community by providing a compassionate, deeply personal care giving ministry.

SUMC’s Stephen Ministers – all members who have received 50 hours of intensive care giving training – provide one to one Christian care to individuals experiencing challenges such as the loss of a loved one divorce, terminal illness, loneliness, unemployment, hospitalization, a spiritual crises, or any number of other life transitions.

A major emphasis of Stephen Ministry and Supervision is confidentiality. Stephen Ministry is a private ministry…those receiving care can be assured that their identity and what develops amidst their caring relationship will remain in the strictest of confidence.

To give a general overview of the ministry as a whole, Stephen Ministry is a trans-denominational care giving ministry developed by Stephen Ministries, St. Louis. Begun in 1975, Stephen Ministry is now in use in thousands of congregations amidst multiple denominations.
